CHASING DREAMS
Being a part of the fashion Industry has always been a dream of mine since I was a young girl. I wasn’t practically fascinated by pervious designers work, but instead I was inspired to start new trend ideas. When I was 11 years old, I started decorating my religious headscarf, hijab, with a simple clip-on flower. It was a shock to see girls follow my signature touch, and till this day I see this design element grow everyday.
After graduating from high school, I was potentially on a career path to become a Graphic Designer. While getting my degree at Kent State University, I realized after my third class session, a Graphic Design career wasn’t my ultimate goal. Changing into Product Development was one of the greatest decisions I have made. After being accepted into FIDM, my dream fashion school, I realized it was time to start my future. It quickly became clear to me in high school that art is my passion. Being creative and seeing things in different ways is a gift.
Learning about the fashion history is one of the greatest key elements for every fashion related business. Without knowing the past, the future wouldn’t be able to know what are some preventable mistakes previous designer have done. Learning about the development of the fashion industry and how the zeitgeist during the 20th century has affected these designers always inspired me to be grateful to live in a modern society.
I didn’t decide to become a designer for the fame and money. I wanted to be a designer because I want to make beautiful things. It inspires me to think people find the way they dress and look is a form of expressing individuality. The way we dress can affiliate to what group we are a part of, culture, religion, mood, or style.
Looking through countless designer names, which I wasn't familiar with, made the process of choosing five seemingly simplistic. Then again, I desire specific qualities and diversity in age offers a broader look at the history of the fashion industry. I chose Georges Barbier, a designer from the 1920s, to represent the roots of 20th century fashion trends. This also lead me to choose Mary Quant, a designer from 1960s who has created trends that have lasted the test of time. I chose her to be a part of my designer project plan because of my obsession with retro modern looks. This has inspired me to introduce a modern men’s clothing line. My third designer, Tommy Hilfiger, from the MTV era in the 1980s is one of my favorite designers due to its simplicity and chic look. Learning the functions and history of this brand would be an exciting research. One of my favorite designers from the Internet Era in the 1990s, Dries Van Noten, was one of my first choice because of how modern and influential he was towards the future of the fashion industry. Last but not least, Thom Browne is my fifth and modernist designer I want to research for this project. Looking through a glimpse of his designs, I figured his mastery in the men’s apparel industry could possible lead me to ideas and concept he has built for running a successful men’s clothing business. This is probably going to be my favorite designer to research and fully understand. Knowing that history is a major lesson for every future designer, it inspires me to understand every concept for my own business.
